Developing a Project Leadership Culture -
international Manufacturing
Background
The European arm of a global manufacturing company had a history of struggling to deliver business critical initiatives, especially new product developments, on time and to budget. The result was wastage and missed opportunities to maximise market share.
The challenge
To enable the client to deliver new product initiatives to market more effectively and develop an understanding of a project leadership culture.
Morgan Clarke’s approach
We did an audit to establish the extent and root causes of the problem. Following our analysis and feedback to the Board, we worked with a group of influential stakeholders to design an approach to develop a project leadership culture within the organisation. Our contribution included:
- Working with all of the key stakeholders to build consensus and design an agreed process for leading and managing projects. Also, to clearly define roles and responsibilities.
- Developing the skills, capabilities and commitment of project sponsors.
- Raising the commercial awareness of the project leaders to help them identify potential business risk.
- Skills development for project leaders. Content included managing business and project risk, as well as managing expectations and stakeholders.
- Presenting company-wide awareness workshops for project team members and others with a stake in project success (or failure!)
- Coaching and mentoring project leaders and sponsors through specific high-profile projects at the start of implementing the new approach.
Achievements
- Projects are now delivered on time and within budget.
- Market opportunities are being fully exploited.
- The organisation now has a very well-developed understanding of project leadership, process and roles. The desired project leadership culture is being built.
- Business strategy and key projects are clearly linked.
